The term microbiome refers to the community of microorganisms that live in different environments. The term encompasses not only the organized community itself, but also the environment in which the microorganisms are present.

There are several microbiomes in the human body. As the microorganisms living in the microbiome interact with the host's cells, they can also affect the host's overall well-being and health. An imbalance in the microbiome (dysbiosis) can therefore cause a variety of diseases, starting with digestive disorders.
